Daniel Hall Kuhn’s one man show, “ALONE: Tales from Edgar Allan Poe,” brings Poe’s fabled stories to life through live performance, multimedia, and special effects. A multitalented artist, Kuhn created and directed this production, which is a spectacular tribute to Poe’s legacy. …a spectacular tribute to Poe’s legacy. Before the performance began, the audience was welcomed with a pre-show soundtrack of ominous music. The red velvet-draped set, flanked by video screens and candles, further contributed to the haunting atmosphere. Dramatic lighting and sound effects additionally enhanced the mood, and the pounding heartbeat accompaniment in “The Tell-Tale Heart” was particularly chilling. Through the magic of digital animation, Edgar Allen Poe himself kicked off the show by greeting the audience and the crowd was delighted by this sequence. Crashing waves under a moonlit sky were shown on the video screens during “Annabel Lee.” The screens also depicted detailed bookcases that represented the chamber setting of “The Raven.” All of these elements stimulated the senses, creating a well-rounded theatrical experience. Showcasing an impressive mastery of Poe’s iconic literature, Kuhn’s performance was phenomenal. His presentation was hypnotic and mesmerizing, stirring emotions with every word. Kuhn exuded confidence and his diction was superior. Through his facial expressions, gestures, and physical acting, Kuhn outstandingly portrayed intense personas, from the anguished lover in “Annabel Lee” to the mischievous murderer in “The Tell-Tale Heart.” His compelling delivery allowed you to visualize Poe’s stories and characters, particularly in his description of the eponymous bird throughout “The Raven.” “ALONE: Tales from Edgar Allan Poe” is the perfect evening of entertainment for the Halloween season, and Kuhn’s extraordinary performance is well worth experiencing. This excellent production is sure to capture the excitement of audiences. For those who have never read his work, this show is a wonderful introduction to Poe. Kuhn’s masterpiece is a brilliant avenue for bringing these literary treasures to the stage.
